Suffering through your debt will simply make you a better person. The change will start with you, but I’m convinced you can do it. I’m also convinced you can’t do it alone. You’ll need to have a plan and build a team around you. It will be tough, you will suffer, be humbled, etc. But you will be a better person for it. You’ll become a champion…guaranteed.

If you are wondering how I ever get into debt I can sum it up for you. GREED. If you have made the decision to get out of debt, then you’ll need to fully understand what got you in debt in the first place.

Examples of common GREED can be found with examples of common debts. For example high credit card debt=GREED. Mortgage you can’t afford=GREED. Car you can’t afford=GREED. Christmas presents you can’t afford=? No health care=? The list can go on with you filling in the blanks.

I’m going to raise my hand to all of the above. Let me tell you a short story. At one time we were Millionaires and I lost everything down to where I was picking up jobs for $10 bucks an hour. Our home was in foreclosure, cable was turned off, the repo men came to our door — we had hit rock bottom. there was no one to blame but myself.

What we did was buckle down, never turned on our cable. Theo kids learned the real meaning of Christmas, and when I look back on it — the journey for our family was awesome. My only mistake was I beat myself up the whole way through. Never once did my wife throw stones, blame me or point a finger. She trusted God and my God given abilities to see us through. Don’t get me wrong things were very stressed and we went through some pretty contentious times but she never said anything that she would regret. I really believe suffering can be a gift if we treat it right and respond in the right way.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

A positive attitude means everything when getting out of debt. If you do not have one, then you need to change your attitude by deciding to get positive about where you want to be in life, staying realistic at the same time. Promise yourself that you’re going to do it and do it!

Getting out of debt is a challenge, treat it as a game or a fight, what ever works for you. Encourage others to do the same. If you decide to take the plunge, finding a trusted friend or partner to go down the same path with you that is good. But if you have to do it alone, then do it! You’ll be surprised how many people are in your shoes. Getting in debt is the easy part. Getting out of debt is very difficult, it takes commitment and perseverance. Look at our country — we claim to be the most powerful country on the planet, yet we cannot control our debt.

Taking responsibility for your debt is the first step to not only getting out of debt but staying out of debt. The society we live in today has a tendency to want to place blame on others for our own shortcomings. Take a long hard look in the mirror. To the person looking at you say, I got myself into this mess. I know it will take all the strength and determination I have to get out of it.

Most debt is greed driven. That is a fact, so don’t lie to your self and pretend it isn’t. You must take 100% of the fault for your debt. Take responsibility for your commitments that you have made whether they are contracts, on signed paper or by hand shakes. This includes car payments, mortgages, credit cards, payday loans, loans from personal friends etc. Don’t be a dead beat.

Life has its setbacks—but very few are permanent and once you get through this one, you’ll be able to help other people get through their debt problems, passing forward with God’s grace. I once ran a marathon—with no previous experience being a runner. I jumped in and did it anyway, now I can encourage and help others take that same plunge. Just because banks and lenders are corporation don’t think that they will just suffer your losses. Somebody is going to pay for your debt. If you don’t pay it back it may be someones job or higher interest rates, on the next loans provided. Someone will suffer from your lack of taking ownership of your debt problem. Getting debt free will be one of greatest and most satisfying things you’ve ever done. Anything less than this is simply dishonest.
